Inside ChamsAccess

In the simplest terms, 5G is a new cellular standard. Phone carriers have jumped to a new wireless standard roughly every decade. About 10 years ago, 4G, the fourth-generation network, arrived with significantly faster speeds and stronger reliability than 3G. About a decade before that, 3G arrived and was much faster and more robust than 2G. You get the picture. What will I do with 5G? The benefits will probably feel subtle and significant. Lower latency is crucial to future mobile applications. It could make virtual reality work more smoothly — like if you were watching a virtual-reality broadcast of a live sports game and wanted to look around the stadium. Reduced lag may also improve gaming: If you were playing a shooting game with friends online, there would be less delay between button presses and your actions in the game. A reduction in latency will also help internet-connected devices talk to one another immediately. That is why technologists are looking to 5G deployment as a crucial step toward a world of autonomous cars. If one car is 5G equipped and so is the other, they can tell each other when they are braking. Or if the vehicle is signaling to turn right, it can communicate the turn to cars behind it so they can slow down or switch lanes. Will 5G be faster than Wi-Fi? In some cases, yes. While Wi-Fi is also very fast, it pulls data from a broadband connection, which is susceptible to degraded performance when others nearby are using it. By design, 5G transmits high amounts of data more efficiently, so it is expected to significantly mitigate network congestion. There...

You might think that the only form of cybercrime you have to worry about is hackers stealing your financial information. But it may not be so simple. There are far more concerns than just basic financial ones. Cybercrime continues to evolve, with new threats surfacing every year. Keep Everything Updated More devices than you realize are connected to the internet. Your phone, wi-fi router, printer, and even some refrigerators could potentially pose a threat. One of the simplest ways to avoid being hacked is to consistently update these devices. By staying up-to-date on the latest software and news surrounding your devices, you’ll not only avoid unwanted bugs and glitches, but you’ll also increase their information security. Software and device developers often build additional security stop-gaps into new updates. If you’re always running the latest versions of software, the likelihood that one of these devices is compromised decreases. Lock It Down Strong, secure passwords are easy and effective ways to limit your risks. Long, random and complex passwords make it much more challenging for anyone unwanted to gain access to your data. And use a password manager. There are numerous programs out there that keep track of your long and complex passwords for you, and even generate secure ones for new sites you sign up for. This is a great way to ensure that the vulnerability of your accounts is limited, and even if one site is compromised, ensuring that it’s unlikely others are with it. Learn The Common Tricks Laughter may be the best medicine, but education is the best vaccine. The best way to protect yourself from compromise is to learn what...

Amazon Alexa can now play podcasts from Apple, making Amazon’s line of Echo devices the first third-party clients to support the Apple Podcasts service without using AirPlay. Before, this level of support was limited to Apple’s HomePod. According to Amazon, the addition brings to Alexa devices Apple’s library of more than 800,000 podcasts. It also allows customers to set Apple Podcasts as their preferred podcast service. The move is the latest in a series of partnerships between the two rivals, which also included the launch of the Apple TV app on Amazon’s Fire TV platform, as well as the launch of Apple Music on Echo devices and Fire TV. Amazon, in response, has expanded its assortment of Apple inventory to include Apple TV, iPad, iPhone, Apple Watch and more. To get started, Apple users who want to stream from Apple Podcasts will first need to link their Apple ID in the Alexa app. Customers can then ask Alexa to play or resume the podcasts they want to hear. Other player commands, like “next” or “fast forward,” work, too. And as you move between devices, your progress within each episode will also sync, which means you can start listening on Alexa, then pick up where you left off on your iPhone. In the Alexa app’s Settings, users will also be able to specify Apple Podcasts as their default player, which means any time they ask Alexa for a podcast without indicating a source, it will stream from the Apple Podcasts service. Not to be outdone, Spotify also today announced its support for streaming podcasts on Alexa in the U.S. Of course, Spotify Premium users...

Google is reportedly interested in purchasing US-based social video app Firework that lets users share short videos like Chinese player TikTok. According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, Chinese micro-blogging platform Weibo had also shown interest in acquiring Firework but "talks with Google are further along". Based in Redwood City, California, Firework that entered India last month was valued at more than $100 million in a fundraising round earlier this year. TikTok's parent, Beijing-based ByteDance, is valued at around $75 billion. Firework is part of a suite of apps created by Loop Now Technologies, a startup that focuses on next-generation consumer mobile applications. Similar to TikTok that allows users to post 15-second short videos, Firework allows users to create 30-second videos and with "Reveal", its patent-pending technology, will allow creators to take both horizontal and vertical video in one shot from their mobile device. The app is currently available on both Android and iOS smartphones with over a million registered users. Firework has appointed Sunil Nair as CEO and MD for its India operations. My vision for Firework in India is to become more relevant and give our users every opportunity to stay meaningful and seamlessly experience a new view from their lens," Nair said in a statement. In November last year, Facebook also quietly released a standalone app called Lasso to compete with TikTok. On Lasso, which is currently available in the US, users can record themselves dancing and lip-syncing to music, similar to what they can do on TikTok. In addition, Facebook recently roped in former Google employee Jason Toff for a key portfolio...

Popular online reference website Wikipedia went down in several countries after the website was targeted by what it described as a "malicious attack". The server of the Wikimedia Foundation which hosts the site suffered a "massive" Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack, the organization's German account said in a tweet late Friday. In a separate statement, the Wikimedia Foundation said that the attack on the Wikipedia online encyclopedia -- one of the world's most popular websites -- was "ongoing" and teams were working to restore access. DDoS attacks often involve legions of zombie computers -- machines infected with viruses and commanded to simultaneously visit a website. Such a massive onslaught of demand can overwhelm website computer servers, slowing service or knocking them offline. Wikimedia condemned the breach of its server, saying it threatened "everyone's fundamental rights to freely access and share information." Similar cyber-attacks have hammered other popular internet domains including Twitter, Facebook, and Google in recent years. ...

Google said Friday it was banning online ads for unproven medical treatments including most stem cell and gene therapy.  "This new policy will prohibit ads selling treatments that have no established biomedical or scientific basis," Google policy adviser Adrienne Biddings said in a blog post. Biddings said Google will "prohibit advertising for unproven or experimental medical techniques such as most stem cell therapy, cellular (non-stem) therapy and gene therapy." Google will also ban "treatments that are rooted in basic scientific findings and preliminary clinical experience, but currently have insufficient formal clinical testing to justify widespread clinical use," she added. The online giant said it made the decision due to "a rise in bad actors attempting to take advantage of individuals by offering untested, deceptive treatments." The company said this was not an effort to diminish the importance of medical discoveries but maintained that "monitored, regulated clinical trials are the most reliable way to test and prove important medical advances." Google said it took the action after consulting experts in the field and that its move was endorsed by the president of the International Society for Stem Cell Research, Deepak Srivastava. In Google's statement, Srivastava was quoted as saying, "The premature marketing and commercialization of unproven stem cell products threatens public health, their confidence in biomedical research, and undermines the development of legitimate new therapies." Online services have struggled to filter out misleading and deceptive content, including medical hoaxes while remaining open platforms. Earlier this year Facebook and Google-owned YouTube moved to reduce the spread of misleading health care claims after a media report showed the proliferation of bogus...

Camera performance is one of the headline features of Google Pixel phones. As per new leaks, the upcoming Pixel 4 duo will continue this trend with some notable camera enhancements such as 8x zoom support and a new “motion mode” for capturing images of moving objects with a blurry background. The vaunted Night Sight feature for low light photography is also tipped to receive an upgrade on the Pixel 4 pair. A 9to5Google report, citing information from a reliable authority, claims that the Pixel 4 will introduce a new camera feature called Motion Mode for action photography. This feature will reportedly allow Pixel 4 users to capture images of fast-moving objects by bringing them into focus while blurring the background elements for a dramatic effect, just like standalone cameras. Moreover, the Night Sight mode has reportedly been improved on the Pixel 4, thanks to speed-related enhancements and general improvements. While it is not clear how image quality will be affected, but speed-related enhancements indicate that the image capture and/or processing time has been reduced. It is unclear whether the improvements will make their way to older Pixel phones. More Pixel 4 images and feature leaks have also surfaced online, courtesy XDA Developers. A new leak gives us a glimpse of the Pixel 4's white variant. The front has a familiar design with a thick top bezel housing the selfie camera and soli radar sensors. Over at...

Qualcomm promised on Friday to bring 5G mobile phones to the masses with a high-end modem and said its chips would also power mid-price devices hitting the market next year. Fifth-generation chipsets from Qualcomm, the world's biggest supplier of mobile phone chips, now run on five devices from Samsung Electronics, including the $1,299 Galaxy S10 5G model and the new $2,000 Galaxy Fold. The company at IFA 2019 announced plans to "accelerate 5G global commercialization at scale by expanding its portfolio of 5G mobile platforms across the Snapdragon 8 Series, 7 Series and 6 Series in 2020."Samsung, the world's top smartphone seller, has also put Qualcomm chips in its lower-priced A90 5G model, which had used Samsung chips in an earlier version.Qualcomm President Cristiano Amon predicted such devices would achieve volume and scale. The transition to 5G is going to be faster than earlier transitions," Amon told Reuters on the sidelines of the IFA consumer electronics fair in Berlin. "Now we have to bring it to everyone. More than 20 network operators and a similar number of smartphone makers - from the United States to Europe to China - are launching 5G services and handsets. Amon estimated there were 2.2 billion mobile users that could upgrade. Such bullishness contrasts with the challenges faced by China's Huawei, the No.2 smartphone seller behind Samsung that also unveiled its 5G chipset at IFA. Huawei's consumer business chief Richard Yu touted the Kirin 990 chipset at IFA as the "most powerful" and superior to Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 series. Due to US trade sanctions, Huawei's 5G-ready Mate 30 smartphone range to be launched on September 19 could be hobbled because...

Samsung has decided to cancel all pre-orders of Galaxy Fold in the US, just ahead of its relaunch for buyers who signed on to purchase the device earlier this year. As per Samsung's email, the pre-orders have been cancelled in order to "ensure that you have the best possible experience with this revolutionary new technology," As per report by The Verge on Thursday, Samsung notes that the company is rethinking the entire process, including purchasing, unboxing, and service for the Fold (although it doesn't offer details). The South Korean tech giant reportedly sent out emails to pre-order customers letting them know that their existing pre-orders, many of which were placed in April, have been cancelled. A Samsung representative reportedly highlighted the recently announced "Galaxy Fold Premier Service" that it will be offering for the Galaxy Fold - presumably part of the new sales process - and promised more details closer to launch, the report added. According to YouTuber M. Brandon Lee, who first made the email by Samsung public, the smartphone player is also throwing in a $250 (roughly Rs. 18,000) credit to be redeemed on any product sold directly through its online store. That includes the Galaxy Fold, so in the end, if you decide to re-pre-order it, you'll get a nice discount for what is definitely one of the most expensive smartphones ever, according to GSMArena. Samsung on Thursday announced that its foldable smartphone will be available in South Korea on September 6 in two colours - Cosmos Black and Space Silver. After its launch in South Korea, the foldable device would also be available in other countries including the...
